New Member Spotlight 9/1/2024
We are thrilled to introduce Deborah Stone, a new addition to our community! To help everyone get to know her a little better, we asked her a few fun questions.
Q: How long have you lived in Chicago?
A: I’ve lived in Chicago since 1979, except for some years when I worked for the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and had an apartment in Springfield.
Q: What do you like about the city? Your neighborhood?
A: I love that Chicago has just about everything you could want (except mountains!) and it’s so easy to get around on transit. I love my neighborhood (Uptown) because of all the committed residents.
Q: What’s your favorite Chicago trivia?
A: I remember the 1992 flood of downtown, when the river poured into abandoned tunnels under the city, came up in basements, and closed LaSalle Street for weeks.
Q: Do you like your job? What is it? What do you like about it?
A: I love my job – I’m Director of the Department of Environment and Sustainability for Cook County. I get to find new ways to help communities, whether that’s through helping residents with energy efficiency and solar power, cleaning up contaminated brownfields, or using native plants to help fight flooding. But after 14 years – I’m retiring!
Q: How did you find 2U?
A: After having been raised United Church of Christ, and from a family of UCC ministers, I was without a church for most of my life. Late after his retirement, my Dad switched from UCC and became an ordained UU minister, and many of my friends have joined UU churches. So when I moved to the neighborhood, it seemed natural to check out 2U.
Q: Most recent never-been-there-before adventure?
A: I just went to one of the free Grant Park concerts for the first time.
Q: What’s your number one comfort food?
A: Totally addicted to candied ginger. And popcorn! (but not together)
